Virgin Media Shorts

When researching inspiration for my short film, I used several websites that I think where the best out of the ones I found. The first was Virgin Media’s Shorts website.  The idea behind the website is to select 12 short films to enter into the final competition, a panel of curators select these. Anybody over the age of 18 whether they are already famous or just starting out can enter.  The winner of the competition is offered the chance to showcase their film in cinema for a year and a total of £30,000 toward their next movie.  Anybody’s movie can be uploaded and will remain on the website, people can access these for free anytime they want so their movie is given a platform to gain more viewers. The judges are from famous media backgrounds, one of which is Julie Walters.

The website hosts a variety of different genres of short films, here are some examples -

I chose these films on account of their simplicity, both of these are set in the same location and have the same characters that do not go through much change. Trains and Paper Planes is a good example of this as it has no dialogue and so relies on the actions of the two main characters, this idea would be good for our film because generally in student films the dialogue doesn't sound very professional or good. I personally feel it would be much better to try and avoid dialogue all together or at least try and keep it to a minimum like this film. On the other hand, Crush. No.472 relies on the dialogue completely, however it is a narrative all the way through except for the end. The narrative in this represents inside the protagonists head which works well and fits as he doesn't change postion at all in film. It is a glimpse into how he thinks about things.
